The incident took place at the Kali Temple in Noamundi, located in West Singhbhum district. According to police sources, the accused, identified as Veer Nayak, broke into the temple late at night on July 15. He allegedly smashed the lock of the back gate, entered the sanctum, and stole gold and silver ornaments, including the deity’s crown.
However, what happened next shocked both the locals and the police
Instead of making a clean getaway, the thief passed out inside the temple premises, right next to the idol he had just robbed. Police said the man appeared to be heavily drunk at the time of the crime and likely fell asleep due to intoxication and exhaustion.
The temple priest, who arrived early in the morning for daily rituals, discovered the thief lying on the ground with the stolen ornaments still beside him. He immediately alerted local residents, who in turn informed the police.
Law enforcement officials arrived at the scene, woke up the thief, and arrested him on the spot. During initial questioning, Veer confessed to the theft but said he did not realize when he fell asleep. Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway. The stolen items have been recovered and returned to the temple.
Interestingly, many locals believe this incident is nothing short of divine justice. Some devotees of Goddess Kali are calling it a miracle, suggesting that the deity herself prevented the thief from escaping by putting him to sleep.
